Where is the Heartland? Timothy Frazer, in his book "Heartland English: Variation and Transistion in the American Midwest", notes popular culture uses the word to paint the Midwest USA as "an interior Eden, unglamorous but home to simple virtues."
True or not, the Heartland is many places to many people. It's more than geography, it's a state of mind. And the rails that cut their way through it have their own personality.
